Microsoft Word XP allows you to define your text conversion when you save the text file. The type of configuration required to make older versions of Word save a text file correctly are not required in Word XP. These instructions show you how to format and save your story once you are ready to submit it.
NOTE: If you intend to copy and paste your story from Microsoft Word XP into your e-mail program, please consult the Word 97/2000 guide to turn off smart formatting first. These guidelines are for those who intend to attach a file to an e-mail.

A window labeled File Conversion will appear. The first selection is Text encoding. Click the button next to "MS-DOS." The second selection is labeled options. Click the box next to "Insert line breaks." End lines with should be set to CR/LF. Click the box next to "Allow character substitution."
You have now created a text document that you should be able to attach to an email and send to Gossamer.
You also may want to save a Microsoft Word (*.doc) version of your fanfic for your own files, but don't send that version to Gossamer!
